 BEQUEATH
Narrated By Adam Ginsberg

Something wicked this way comes
with grinding teeth and bloody gums
It wants to see you die tonight
It wants to see you suffer

Its eyes are red its soul is black
possessing evil most beasts lack
It wants to see you try tonight
and live to see another

But not without your spirit broken
Your begs for mercy softly spoken
It wants to see you cry tonight
and steal away each tear

You’ll know it well before the end
Before its outstretched claws extend
Its truth will be your lie tonight
Its nourishment your fear

You had your chance to run away
Now you’re committed come what may
You’ll wish you’d walked on by tonight
But that don’t matter now

It circles you with harsh intent
You’d better let this vile beast vent
Emotions running high tonight
No chance to talk it down

So let it feed endure the pain
You’ll need each ounce of strength again
For it won’t let you die tonight
that must come as relief?

As you endure a thousand deaths
It will be of no consequence
For it won’t blind you from the sight
that it will now bequeath

THE ART OF ROBERT ARAGON Trading Card Set Inducted into the Bridgeman Art Library

Comic-Con Experience 2008 #4
Robert Aragon at his table in Artist's Alley

One of the many constants on the Exhibition Floor is Artists' Alley, a section dedicated to independent artists. Offerings in this section are mostly comic-book related, but can range from the beautiful to the bizarre. It is in this section of the exhibit floor where we find our Comic-Con Experience 2008 #4, artist Robert Aragon. While many artists in Artists' Alley have horror-themed offerings, Aragon's pieces are one-of-a-kind tributes to classic horror films, with a particular emphasis on Universal and Hammer. Mr. Aragon licenses the likeness of many of his subjects from the actor's estates, including those of Boris Karloff and Lon Chaney, and his art accurately and artistically captures the spirit and images of the old films. You'll find no grotesque, trendily warped images of Dracula or the Mummy here, no modern gothic influences. After all, Boris Karloff's Frankenstein's Monster needs no embellishment. By: Julia Merriam (July 7th, 2008) Read entire articlehere

About Robert Aragon
A self-taught and award winning artist, Robert Aragon is noted for bringing shadows to the forefront of his work, which adds an air of mystery to the subjects of his portraits. Mr. Aragon is one of the leading fine art portrait artists in the world. His work is exhibited internationally and is represented and protected by the very prestigious Bridgeman Art Library. Now, for the first time in history, all of Robert’s artwork is showcased in a trading card set (shown below) which involves all of Aragon’s silver screen favorites.

The kindhearted Mr. Aragon is a writer and gifted artist who showed talent from the time he could almost walk. So, this trading card set has been in the making for literally 20 years. Mr. Aragon has created works for Famous Monsters of Filmland, Karloff Enterprises, Universal Studios, Lugosi Enterprises, Ray Harryhausen, Warner Bros Studios, Diabolique Magazine, The Steve McQueen Estate, and others.

Over time, Mr. Aragon has become close to quite a few horror stars and their families. This closeness has helped him clear any licensing obstacles, which would have made the creation of the set difficult or impossible to accomplish.

MNS Cards president Mark Abent had this to say... “This set is unprecedented in the fact we were able to gather so many iconic classic names together. They love his work and the concept of the project.”

Robert Aragon became very close to one particular horror star, Vincent Price. In the early nineties, Robert and Vincent would share artwork with one another. So, it comes as no surprise that a highly limited number of cut signature cards of Vincent Price and original art created by Price will be randomly inserted into the card set by way of a redemption card. (These will have no expiration date.)

The base set of cards will be made up of 72 cards celebrating some of Robert Aragon’s established works, while many new pieces have been created specifically for the card set. Each box will yield one base set. In addition, there will be three different chase card sets. Each box will contain random cards from each of the following chase sets.
  • The Faces of Fear: A nine card foil chase set (with different backs.)
  • Vincent PriceMaster of Menace: A nine card chase set, which features puzzle backs.
  • Gothic Treasures: Six different cards make up this chase set, which is actually made out of wood, yes wood. The back of each card is a piece to a larger puzzle.

Boxes for “The Art of Robert Aragon” trading card set will have randomly inserted autographs from such notables as Bela Lugosi, Jr., Bob Burns, Caren Marsh, Carla Laemmle, George Clayton Johnson (rare), Jane Adams, Janet Ann Gallow, Julie Adams, Kathy Burns, Ron Chaney, Sara Karloff, and of course, Robert Aragon. Extremely rare Cut Signatures from acclaimed horror actor Vincent Price will be inserted into the boxes as well.

Redemption Cards will be randomly inserted into boxes for a chance to win original art created by Vincent Price and original trading card art drawn by Robert Aragon. Also, signed uncut autograph sheets, lithographs signed by Robert Aragon, Peggy Moran or Jane Adams and uncut sheets of the base and chase cards, and original and complete four (4), six (6), and nine (9) sketch card puzzles will be available.

Sketch cards will be randomly seeded into boxes based on the silver screen art of Robert Aragon. Twenty-five different artists have contributed to the set. Some of the artists include: Asleigh Popplewell, Nick Neocleous, Carolyn Edwards, Rich Molinelli, Bryan Tillman, Christiaan Voldstad, Oscar De Anda and Robert Aragon just to name a few.

Inside each case one of three different Canvas Case Toppers, which will be included as an added incentive. This card is made of canvas material and is textured. Each box will include 2 to 4 random hits per box, from the following: autograph cards, sketch cards, prop cards, cut signature cards, printing plates, and redemption cards. Each box will have a base set of 72 cards with random chase cards from all three chase sets. There will be 200 cases produced with 15 boxes per case.

So, if you’re a devout horror fan, art enthusiast, or just a collector in general, this set is definitely for you! Older fans will be able to reminisce, while a younger generation can discover what they've been missing. For more information visit: www.mnscards.com

NEWS UPDATE! Pittsburgh, PA – February 25, 2015Horror Realm, Pittsburgh’s modern horror convention has released the full schedule of events for its 2015 spring event being held March 6 - 8, 2015 at the Crowne Plaza Pittsburgh West Green Tree Hotel.

Sean Whalen, a working actor, writer, producer, and acting coach with more than 25 years of experience in Hollywood, will be leading a workshop for actors on Sunday, March 8 at 2pm. “Scene Study from a Working Actor’s Perspective” will help participants break down scenes that are selected by Mr. Whalen based on their age. Buy tickets here

Scenes will be sent to participants in advance of the workshop to allow time for preparation and practice. Tickets for this unique presentation are $55 and must be purchased in advance here prior to 5pm on Saturday, March 7, 2015. The workshop is open to aspiring actors age 12 and older. Mr. Whalen, who is best known to horror fans from his role in the film “The People Under The Stairs,” will be appearing as a guest at the convention.

SCENE STUDY FROM A WORKING ACTOR'S PERSPECTIVE
This workshop that has had success in Los Angeles and Nashville over the last couple of years now becomes available to Horror Realm!

DESCRIPTION: Having scenes broken down and analyzed by a working actor, writer and producer is a unique experience. Sean wants to make sure you understand that you have to break down a scene with the full knowledge of who you are in the scene, who else is in the scene and what that means to you, what the writer is trying to say, and where it fits in the story. Unfortunately many actors think that if you understand these aspects of the scene, then it "puts you in your head" and keeps you from being loose. Sean knows that you still have to be open, truthful, and in the moment while having full knowledge of what the producers and directors are trying to achieve. This approach takes your skills to the next level and gets you ready to work on any set or stage.

To ensure that that you have the most time with Sean, he will send you the scene before the class so you can be prepared. Sean picks scenes that are right for your age. Most instructors don't take the time to do this. Sign up hereOnce you register, you will be contacted by Horror Realm to provide your age, phone number, email, and picture of yourself or headshot.  Sean will then email you a scene that you will need to print out and bring with you.

 About Sean Whalen:
Sean Whalen is a working actor, writer, producer, and acting coach with over 25 years of experience in Hollywood. He has worked in literally every type of genre in entertainment: large studio movies, small independent films, comedy TV, dramatic TV, Soap Operas, children's shows, commercials, etc. Being involved in the business from all sides has given Sean a wealth of knowledge that he is excited to share with new actors trying to expand their knowledge so they can have a long career in show business.

WHO ARE YOU
[Excerpt from an article written by Ann Thraxx]

. . . The monsters in our head the monsters in our heart the monsters in our soul the monsters in our head the monsters in our heart the monsters in our soul the monsters in our head the monsters in our heart the monsters in our soul the monsters in our head the monsters in our heart the monsters in our soul the monsters in our head the monsters in our heart the monsters in our soul . . .

Oh, my darling invisible friends, how the world has changed!! I am certainly not the oldest person in the world, but I have experienced the world long enough to know that change happens whether we want it or not. Years ago, this whole “internet” business was non-existent, and the only people you really knew were those you came in direct contact with…unless you were just geeky or curious enough to branch out and get one of those archaic things known as a pen-pal (I was, and I did) and even then, you only knew what was written on that piece of paper that came in the mail, or what photos were included, and even then it was a given that all of that information could be a lie.

Nowadays, it’s incredibly easy to lie. You can become a totally different person with a few keystrokes! Why, all you really have to do is think of who you want to be, type it out all neat and tidy-like, and voila! You are now Sam Jones, Athletic Director for the prestigious School of Really Smart People Who Like To Be Athletic (apologies to anyone named Sam Jones…)

I have encountered quite a few people online in the last several years. Some are exactly what they portray on the screen, and some are brazen crazies online and perfectly sane in person….and some are somewhere in between. Some people forever hide behind cartoon avatars and others give airs of being incredibly educated or influential, when in real life they are trembling wallflowers…

Why is that? Why exactly must you always pretend? Doesn't it get tiresome? I'm so puzzled by this double-agent mentality. I've been thinking in recent weeks about my own online persona. Granted, the name “Ann Thraxx” is not my actual name. But I like that name, and have even told people, “Call me Annie,” because really, my pen-name has become an integral part of me.

It is my nom de plume and rather than hide behind it, I've simply absorbed it. I am Ann Thraxx, and that’s okay. I can differentiate between stepping outside my door and going to pay a bill or signing for a package, and signing my alias to the various little notes I leave on Instagram. It’s not rocket science…

By Ann Thraxx

Remember when we put our heads together and came up with a plan?
… and everything was simple, back then.
It didn't matter if the trip into this Neverland would cost us our sanity
… because everything was eerily simple, back then.

I remember all too well,
that willingness to step onto the coals of Hell.
I remember you beckoning me forward,
reminding me to ignore the heat.

I recall the smell of my flesh against the fire
with the first step, and the second.
The sound…
soft moans of pain
leaking from my throat,

as I tried to keep it in my head that
we would be unstoppable together.

I faltered, I remember.
I stumbled.

I remember you whispering that I could be wicked, if I wanted.
I remember you murmuring your admiration for my lack of caution.
But I tripped, and fell, burning my hands and knees
and your eyes glazed over with disinterest when you heard my pleas.

My failure… your disgust.
Your forked tongue… my mistrust.

Everything was simple, back then.
Everything was eerily simple.

Every day is a struggle now,
remembering that I am supposed to be normal…
forgetting you, little by little…
watching the scars of our trip through brimstone
heal, little by little…

I remember you retreating back into your psychosis,
wishing I could slip in with you…

I hope when I forget you
you’ll still remember me.

Festival organizers Mike & JoAnn Thomas kept the award a secret to surprise Mr. Oberst, who has often cited Lon Chaney as a major influence and expressed a desire to play the “Man of a Thousand Faces” on stage or screen.     Ron Chaney, speaking on behalf of the Chaney family, thanked the FHFF crowd for helping to
keep the Chaney cinematic legacy alive.

Mr. Chaney said.... “We are honored to be here tonight to present this first ever Lon Chaney Award in the spirit and in the memory of my grandfather and great-grandfather."Ron Chaney is President & CEO of Chaney Entertainment, Inc., which manages licensing rights to Lon Chaney & Lon Chaney, Jr. and maintains The Official Chaney website and store here.

Bill signed autographs for his loyal fans and two of his highly acclaimed films were screened during the convention: one was director Jourdan McClure and writer Ryan Finnerty’s Children of Sorrow in it’s original director’s cut version and the other was writer and director Billy Pon’s recently premiered Circus of the Dead.

Bill Oberst Jr. had this to say in a recent interview
with a noted horror movie critic...

"My love for Lon Chaney was born in the pages of Famous Monsters magazine, where publisher Forrest J. Ackerman introduced a boyhood hero of his, The Man Of A Thousand Faces, to my generation. In those pre-video days in my little rural town there was no way to see old movies, especially old silent ones, except to order Super 8 clips from them and run them on the family movie projector. I did. I knew when I saw him I would never be the same. Suddenly I knew. I knew what I wanted to be."

"When I told Ron Chaney that seeing his great-grandfather in the unmasking scene from the 1925 "Phantom Of The Opera" changed my life and set me on my career path, he told me that he had heard a similar story from many over the course of his life, including my favorite author, Ray Bradbury, who often wrote that he was mesmerized as a boy seeing that same scene with Chaney in his hometown movie theater in Waukegan, IL."

"The year Ray Bradbury died, I went to Waukegan and performed a Bradbury story in that very same movie theater, a story in which he mentions Chaney, for the Ray Bradbury Storytelling Festival, and now here I was talking to Chaney's great-grandson about Bradbury and the others, including myself, who had been so thrilled by the artistry of Lon Chaney in "Phantom Of The Opera" and "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame" and dozens more (and by that of his son as "The Wolf Man") that we had decided to become creative artists of one sort or another; while holding an award bearing the Chaney name presented by representatives of the Chaney family. So yes, I was speechless."

"It was a personally meaningful moment that capped a year of odd Chaney connections: the artist who created my make-up for CBS-TV's "Criminal Minds" last spring is also a huge Chaney fan, and he purposefully made the character's look an homage to the wounded monsters that Chaney excelled at playing. Earlier I had encountered a screenwriter working on a script about Chaney's relationship with director Tod Browning, and later in the year a film fan sent me a copy of a short story by Robert Bloch I had never seen called "The Legacy," about Chaney's famous make-up kit (which I had studiously tried to recreate as a boy using mail-order make-up materials and my father's old fishing tackle box.).

"I began to think about why no one has portrayed Chaney onscreen for so many decades and began daring to dream of playing him myself. And then comes this award. It is been a very Lon Chaney year. For a misfit kid horror movie fan like me, that's a great year! I could not be happier, or more grateful to Ron Chaney, Chaney Enterprises and the wonderful founders of the FANtastic Horror Film Festival, Mike and JoAnn Thomas, for allowing me to take home a memory that will inspire me. "Keep going," Ron Chaney told me as we parted, "Never quit. They didn't!" That's advice I will take, and take to heart."

Solo Exhibition Of Drawings, Photos And Video By Italian Horror Movie Director Mariano Baino Coming March 2014

IMAGO IGNIS
Friday, March 13th
Saturday, March 14th, 2015

Sala Del Lazzaretto
Hall of the Leprosarium
Naples, Italy

   - DIABOLIQUE NEWS UPDATE! The 4th Municipality of the City of Naples in Italy is pleased to present, IMAGO IGNIS, a spectacular solo exhibition of mixed media drawings, photos and video by renowned Italian horror film director MARIANO BAINO.

IMAGO IGNIS explores this artist’s fascination with half-glimpsed signs of hidden realities and forbidden tomes and presents a series of mixed media recreations of pages from lost books and secret grimoires, achieved through the use of fire and water painstakingly applied to the drawing surface before and after the artwork is completed. The drawings represent a gallery of creatures from the darkest nightmares and anatomical studies which seem the work of a naturalist who has found a shortcut to access the most remote regions of hell.

Each piece of artwork will be accompanied by a story explaining each piece's alleged provenance.“You'll be able to see the only surviving page of the first edition of De Praestigiis Daemonum and some burnt fragments of pages from the famed De Furtivis Cryptomensis rescued from a fire that destroyed Barking Church, London, in 1666,” Mr. Baino tells us, “There will also be a couple of pieces that reference my film work and add to the universe of Dark Waters.”

Part of the spectacular 16th century Hall of the Leprosarium, almost 200 feet long, will be dedicated to an exhibit of concept art and storyboards by the director, who always draws all his own pre-production artwork, used to pre-visualize his meticulously composed shots, known to his fans and to film critics for their stylistic rigor and the visual opulence that distinguishes them.

“We wanted to take advantage of Mariano Baino’s presence in Naples, where he’s currently scouting potential locations for his new film, ASTRID’S SAINTS, to mount an exhibition which would give Neapolitans the possibility to see the incredible artwork of this multitalented artist,” declares Dr. Armando Coppola, President of the 4th Municipality of the City of Naples, which is lending its prestigious patronage to the event.

The imposing, magnificent Hall of The Leprosarium, with its magical atmosphere and its past in which the place echoed with the laments of plague, leprosy and cholera victims, is an ideal setting for the work of this visionary film director whose work often deals with disquieting subject matter.

Mariano Baino fell in love with this spectacular location, which he discovered thanks to the unparalleled work of Maurizio Gemma, director of the Campania Film Commission, while scouting potential locations for his next film, a psychological mystery drama titled ASTRID’S SAINTS, co-written with actress Coralina Cataldi-Tassoni who will play the lead, which Mariano plans to shoot in Naples.

About MARIANO BAINO
www.marianobaino.com

Mariano Baino is an award-winning film director and screenwriter hailed as “one of the great torch-bearers for expressionistic cinema” by Montreal's Fantasia Film Festival, where his film DARK WATERS won the Prix Du Public (Audience Prize). He's also the recipient of the prestigious Vincent Price Award for Outstanding Contribution to Fantastic Cinema from Rome’s FantaFestival and many other accolades.

His work has been screened at New York’s prestigious Lincoln Center and at The National Museum of Cinema in Turin and has been described as a “masterpiece of arthouse horror" by Scott Macauley in FilmMaker magazine and prized for its “little sense of conformity” by Mark Kermode in Sight and Sound, and described as a “true object of veneration for aficionados”  by Italy’s LA REPUBBLICA, which also noted that “Baino’s work has been compared to Ingmar Bergman's for its somber atmosphere, enigmatic characters and depth of religious meditation.”

Using drawing as a means of expression (and as a way to create alternative realities) is something Mariano Baino has been doing since early childhood, and something he continues to explore parallel to, and in conjunction with, his film work. “I like creating alternative realities,” Baino says. “I enjoy inventing worlds that don't exist or that, maybe, exist only in the shadows between worlds. Shadows that hide secrets bigger than we are meant to comprehend and truths too terrifying to contemplate.”

“I imagine myself in the role of a prop finder who has found the key to explore every earthly and unearthly dimension in order to find the props for this continuously evolving film, which I try to create with my drawings. But I don’t like to confine my monstrous or disturbing creatures to the nether regions of hell: sometimes, you can find them in blindingly over-lit places. Many times, monsters are the true innocents and the fact that the subjects of my drawings are consumed by flames doesn’t mean that they deserve it.”

As Gordon Wyler, co-curator of Mariano Baino’s solo exhibition CYPHERS AND FLAMES held at Brooklyn’s SoapBox Gallery, noted: “His creative process, with its use of the destructive power of fire and water as an integral part of the artistic creation, is at once sophisticated and enthusiastically child-like. His recreations of pages from lost books, treated to resemble pages rescued from the flames of the Inquisition, show a desertion of the confinements of genre painting and horror illustration. His work transcends traditional fantasy art and bridges the gap between commercial illustration, prop-making, and fine art.”

Mariano Baino’s artwork and photos have been used in films, music videos, books and CD covers. His distinctive drawings and digital-art creations, have been exhibited in Italy, the UK and The United States. Visit his websitehere

Life Without Art Is Stupid And A Part Of Who We APart Of Human Existence By Ann Thraxx

"Life Without Art Is Stupid"

Ann Thraxx says... I read this on a sign, in a video, on youtube years ago, and it felt true. I believe that art is an intrinsic part of who we are in the human existence.

I don't love every piece of art I see. I have seen pieces of artwork that I loathed... and this too is important. Despite what I love or loathe, art makes me feel. Art exists to make us feel. It exists because we feel. When I discovered how connected I really am to art and began experimenting with graphic alteration, my perception shifted a little.

"I developed an even greater respect for those who create something with a pencil and paper or paint and canvas."

My canvas is digital, and my brush a soft-tipped stylus. My canvas is seldom blank, it begins with a photograph or piece of art created by another. I shift my lens to show an alternative perception. My writing experience is a little different...stories play out in my head, and I rush to capture them onto paper or on the screen.  I'm still shifting the lens, but in this case it is with the hope of allowing the reader to see their version of my story.

I love poetry. I don't claim to understand all poetry, but as with art, it makes me feel. When I write poetry, I have the power to leave almost every rule of writing behind, and this bothers me... and it liberates me.

Eerie Von's Famous Cave Shoot of the MISFITS

   DIABOLIQUE  NEWS UPDATE!
This major journalistic endeavor hopes to capture and preserve a behind-the-scenes story. Documented over a 30 year period as witnessed by Rock Legend Eerie Von.
___________________________________________
"It's been a great ride, and I’m glad to be able
to share some of it with those who were there,
and those who wish they were.” - Eerie Von
________________________________

This piece of music history, celebrates Eerie Von's tenure with three influential bands that would change rock'n roll forever. Including hours of personal archival footage and photography as taken during EV's journalistic endeavors as a contributing performer.

Culled from Eerie Von's coveted personal archives; Eerie shares his life work as a formative band member. With newly archived rare photography, exclusive interviews, unseen concert footage and never before seen home videos shot during The Misfits, Samhain and Danzig years. A continuation of his book, "Misery Obscura,"this feature length documentary film is an "all-access pass." With on-the-road footage, this rarely seen back-story exposes a true journey, the journey of brotherhood.

MISERY OBSCURA is in the process of being put back into print, check back for updates!
“Misery Obscura is the result of 28 years behind the camera,...filled with extraordinary memories, from The Misfits and The Necros to Danzig and Metallica. Punk rock and Heavy Metal, devil-locks and lots of Karo syrup... scrapbook-style stories of triumph and damnation bring to life an era the likes of which will never again be seen. This is the brief history of those bands and more during one of the most fertile and inspired eras in music history. A time of hand-made t-shirts, leather boots, b-movies and fiend clubs.” - The Left Hand Path, March 2010

Eerie Von's camera captured the dark heartof rock's most vital and bleeding edge period, a time when rock 'n roll was not only dangerous but downright menacing.

Documenting everything from his beginnings as the photographer of the Misfits and punk rock drummer of Rosemary's Babies to the heights of Danzig's stadium rock glory alongside metal superstars Metallica. This film, as an essential visual document of music history... brings to life an era the likes of which will never again be seen.

Risks and challenges

The great thing about this documentary is thanks to Eerie Von, half of this documentary has already been shot. However, The tape restoration out of the gate is minimally 8k. We have tapes that barely play and have to be chemically re-magnetized, some are better than others. This process includes placing the actual tape itself into a chemical, soaking for a period of time, re-spooling it and then transferring to digital so it is top quality, not grainy BS.
Due to the nature of this documentary, one potential obstacle is time constraints; due to the fact that our interviewees are artists with touring schedules. Our primary obstacles include travel, general post production, film restoration, photo restoration, editing, color correction, audio mastering, etc.
In addition to the live footage, we still need to shoot the artist interviews; Therefore, travel is essential. Travel expenses to get to the artists or bring the artists to us (Flights, rental cars, hotels and food). Plus, the insurance costs for people, locations, and property casualty -- so we don't get sued if something bazaar happens.
There is an added expense/obstacle for our social marketing team, Internet, TV, radio, sat radio, etc ...
And as Eerie would say, "Not for nothing'," there's LOADS of legal expenses when it comes to making a film!
We all have other jobs in the business that we have to take personal time off from to accomplish this. With a way under rate pay for the crew (just barely enough to keep a roof over their head and the lights on).
Compared to rock docs of this caliber, we are 200k less than the cheapest produced films out there today. Example: Dave Grohl's Sound City. The more we raise above the goal, the more cities we can set up. Funds could also support the extensive cost involved in licensing any of the "relevant" music, EVEN IF Eerie performed on the recording.
